Consuming Fire

Deuteronomy 9:1-3

““Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, 2a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ 3Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you.”

The Israelites faced a great challenge of their lives. They were led into something that is bigger than them. With the description of the nations, the Israelites were to meet and battle with they who cannot stand them. The city is mighty, and the descendants of Anak are powerful, great and tall. What they need is faith and strength of the Lord. God commanded them to do something that was beyond their strength, their knowledge or wisdom. Why? To let them know that they serve the all-consuming fire. The only one who can help them through this challenge of their lives only if they trusted in Him. What is God telling us through these verses? There are challenges, there are problems, some descendants of Anak, who think they are in power position, great and mighty are somewhere waiting for your consumption. Those that think no one can stand them! But do you know what? God has promised you victory. He is a consuming fire. He is not a respecter of nobody. As He helped the Israelites to shame their enemies, destroy their power, greatness and mighty characteristics, so He will deal with those who compare themselves to God as powerful, mighty and greater than you. God will go before you as a consuming fire and destroy their gathering, gang up, agenda, plans and activities. Just make sure your ways are right with the Lord and you will be a conqueror.

God was preparing His people that there was a battle ahead of them and how it would be. What is the battle you are projecting ahead of you? What is the battle like right now? Absolutely it looks difficult and insurmountable, but nothing is impossible with our God. Victory is possible and only in the Lord our God. Understand that it is impossible to win the battle on your own, but be encouraged, be optimistic, and be assured that with God the battle cannot be lost. Amen!
