The Power of the Tongue

Proverbs 10:19

“In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.”

There is power in the tongue. You can use it to bless or damage someone. Which one are you using your tongue for? The Word of God says, “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. (James 1:26) You don’t want your living to be in vain.  There are other scriptures that tell us to watch the words that come from our mouth. Proverbs 12:18 says, “There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Your tongue is like a two edged sword. It can bring joy, restoration and in that same moment it can bring sadness and separation. This is why I ask the Lord to help me know when I am to speak and when I should shut up. I have spoken carelessly, thinking I was doing the right thing, but found out later that my words did more damage than good. One thing is true about  a loose tongue, once the words leave your mouth, you cannot take it back. You might apologize later but the damage has been done. Your words have entered the mind of the individual person or persons and it sticks in their conscience and subconscious mind. That is why it is important to seek God’s wisdom before you open your mouth. You should always pray and ask the Lord  to give you wisdom on what to say and what not to say. This is what I do and in the end He receives the Glory. I’ve also learned to pray more and speak less to my children, I use to be the mom that always has to correct right then on the spot, but I’ve learned that the more I talk, the more they do what they want to do, which is right up satan’s alley. He wants to destroy the family and have it in disarray. I’ve learned to let the Lord do the speaking on my behalf. When He speaks things change. There is power in letting the Lord fight for you. So as the scripture states today, let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Ephesians 4:29) Think before you open your mouth, silence is a sign that one is wise not weak.

Be blessed!
